Helium Stick

This is a fun team building activity that causes the group to have to scratch their heads a little to figure out. Get five to eight people to let a balsa wood stick or dowel rod rest on their index fingers. Dowel rods can be picked up at any hobby store or home improvement store. If you are not sure what they are, just ask someone in the store to point them out to you.  Use the longest and lightest (thinnest) one that is available.  You should be able to find one that is really thin and about three feet long.

The goal is for the group to lower the "helium stick" to the ground without any of the index fingers losing contact.  Since each person has two hands (two index fingers), there will be between 10 and 16 fingers supporting the light weight of the stick.  Since the goal is to both lower the stick and keep contact with the stick, individuals tend to over-compensate, and the stick magically begins to rise.  Thus the name, "Helium Stick."

Suggest that the group get creative to solve their problem.  Eventually, they will come up with a solution.
